HADLEY, Mass. – The Wesleyan University men's and women's rowing teams will compete for the 2018 NESCAC Rowing Championships Friday, May 11, which will be held at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The NESCAC Championship is awarded based on performance in the first varsity eight grand final race at the National Invitational Rowing Championship (NIRC),

Last year, Bates won the women's grand final, while the Bates men were second at the 2017 NIRC. By finishing as the top team from the NESCAC, the Bobcat men captured their second overall title, while the Bobcat women claimed their third overall trophy.

In the women's grand final, Bates narrowly beat out Williams. The Bobcats crossed the finish line in a time of 6:45.422, while the Ephs clocked in at 6:45.823 for second place. Tufts was third among NESCAC teams (6:55.290) and Wesleyan rounded out the field (6:57.632).

The Bates men posted a time of 6:01.363, while Williams turned in a time of 6:07.479 to finish fourth, and Tufts placed fifth with a time of 6:11.668.

Williams and Trinity are the only other schools to win NESCAC titles. The Ephs have captured eight men's titles and 10 women's championships, while the Bantams have four men's titles and a pair of women's crowns in their history.

Last weekend at the New England Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond, the Bates women took first place in all seven of its races, including four grand finals. The Bobcats won the varsity eight grand final for the fourth year in a row, posting a time of 6:46.476. Wesleyan was third (6:56.702) and Williams (7:00.496) and Tufts (7:03.064) rounded out the field in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

The Bates men won their varsity eight grand final race with a time of 5:58.863. Williams was third (6:06.267) and Tufts was sixth (6:13.191).

Hamilton will also be competing in the NIRC and NESCAC Championships on Friday. The Continental women's team took silver at the New York State Collegiate Championship on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. last weekend. Hamilton qualified for the varsity eight final for the third year in a row and posted a time of 7:24.392 in the grand final. Ithaca won the varsity eight final with a time of 7:13.800.

The Hamilton men also earned silver at the state championship race. The Continentals posted a time of 6:39.872 in the grand final, finishing behind the U.S. Military Academy (6:36.600).

If the grand final at the NIRC is not able to be conducted on Friday at Lake Quinsigamond, the NESCAC Championships, and along with it the conference's automatic bid, will be based on the results of the grand final from the New England Rowing Championships. The NCAA Women's Rowing Championship is set for May 25-26 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.
