Cardinals Sweep Doubleheader With Bethany Lutheran

TUSCON, Ariz.- The Wesleyan University baseball team defeated Bethany Lutheran College 19-5 thanks to a combined seven RBIs from Marco Baratta '16 and Will O'Sullivan '17 in game one of the double-header at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson Ariz. In game two, Baratta would knock in two more runs, and Jordan Farber would knock in three of his own, as the Cardinals would sweep the doubleheader, defeating the Vikings 13-6.

GAME ONE:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  •  Wesleyan got out of the gates early, scoring seven runs in the first and five in the second. They would also put up five runs in the fifth inning.
  •  The Cardinals outhit the Vikings 16-10.
  •  Bethany Lutheran committed four errors in the game, while Wesleyan committed none. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Peter Rantz '16 pitched 6.0 innings for the Cardinals, giving up four runs while striking out four. He allowed just one walk and gave up eight hits.
  • Baratta came in for an inning on relief work and surrendered one run while striking out two. He also went 2-3 at the plate with four RBIs.
  • O'Sullivan went 3-4 with three RBIs.
  • For the Vikings, Danny Kneeland went 2-2 with two walks and Alec Zentziz went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

GAME TWO:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Bethany Lutheran scored six runs in the first two innings to give themselves a 6-2 lead heading into the third.
  • The Cardinals would erupt for eight runs in the fourth inning to take a 11-6 lead, and the deficit would prove to large for the Vikings to overcome. 
  • The two teams were almost even in hits, with Bethany Lutheran outhitting Wesleyan by one, 13-12.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  •  Faber went 2-4 on the night with 3RBIs and a solo homerun.
  •  Eric Jones '16 had a double and a triple in the game as he went 3-4 on the evening. 
  •  Nick Miceli '17 got the win for the Cardinals, going six innings and striking out seven. 
  •  Kneeland went 3-4 for the Vikings, and Zentziz went 2-4 with 4 RBIs.
