MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Sophomore quarterback Mark Piccirillo of the Wesleyan University football team was named the NESCAC Offensive Player of the Week for his stellar performance in the Cardinals' 59-14 rout of Little Three archrival Williams College.
Piccirillo was nearly perfect in the win as he went 14-of-19 for 288 yards and five touchdowns, including a 50-yard score, and did not throw an interception. In addition, he rushed six times for a team-high 66 yards and a TD. He recorded these impressive numbers in just 30 minutes of game action as he did not play in the second half. Wesleyan led 56-14 at halftime.
The 45-point margin of victory was the largest in the 122-game history of the Wesleyan/Williams rivalry. Prior to yesterday's game, the Cardinals' largest win against the Ephs was 35 points back in 1900. In addition, Wesleyan won the Little Three title with the victory – its second in the past four seasons – as the Cardinals won their sixth-straight game to improve to 6-1.
Piccirillo has shined for Wesleyan this season and ranks second in the NESCAC in passing yards (199.1 yards per game) and total offense (253.4 ypg), and fifth in rushing yards (54.3 ypg). He's thrown nine touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Wesleyan returns to the gridiron next Saturday, Nov. 12 and will host undefeated Trinity (7-0) in the 'Battle of the Birds' beginning at 12 p.m.
