Hannah Plappert '16 Scores Twice, Adds an Assist as Field Hockey Upends 12th-Ranked Tufts, 3-2

Hannah Plappert '16 scored a pair of goals on penalty corners in the first half, on passes from Lauren Yue '17, to spot homestanding Wesleyan a 2-0 lead over Tufts Tues., Sept. 29 en route to a 3-2 victory. The first one came with 30:18 left in the half, and the second just three minutes later at 27:05. Both were hard shots from near the top of the circle, the first low through traffic that went just inside the left post and the second that skipped into the middle of the cage. Plappert upped her seasonal goal total to five.

Tufts got one back with 4:59 left when a shot from the top of the circle that was blocked but became a rebound toward the net and a Jumbo was able to tuck it in past Cardinal goalie Sara Grundy '16.  

Tufts outshot the Cardinals in the first half, 3-2, but Wesleyan led at intermission, 2-1.

Wesleyan took a 3-1 lead at 57:02 on the first goal of the season by Tierney Behles '18, who received a centering pass from Plappert and fired in a shot from the middle of the circle past the Jumbo goalie.

The Jumbos responded just 52 second later to cut the margin to 3-2.

Tufts generated 10 shots in the second period to just two by Wesleyan, but Grundy came up with two saves while the Jumbos shot wide seven times, including the final shot of the game off a penalty corner situation after time had expired.  Grundy finished with three stops.  

Tufts entered the game ranked 12th nationally and had defeated Wesleyan 12 consecutive times dating back to 2005 when Wesleyan last downed the Jumbos.

Wesleyan will be away from home Sat., Oct. 3, visiting Hamilton in a NESCAC game for its next contest.  The game will bewebcast.
