Middletown, Conn. - The Wesleyan Cardinals defeated the visiting MCLA Trailblazers 85-75 thanks in part to Junior Harry Rafferty's 19 points and Senior Rashid Epps' 10 rebounds. The Cardinals won their fifth straight game improving to 5-1, while MCLA falls to 2-5.
The first half began with the teams trading shots, and Wesleyan held a 14-10 lead with 11:30 left to go. The Cardinals then scored seven straight points in under a minute to push their lead to 11. The Trailblazers were able to cut the lead to five points with 4 minutes to go in the half, but then Wesleyan went on a 14-5 run, and the Cardinals led 45-31 at the break.
The second half started with a three-point play by Junior Joseph Kuo, which gave the Cardinals a 17 point lead at 48-31. The Trailblazers chipped away at the lead as Senior Khalil Paul scored seven points in a row to get the Cardinals' lead down to five at 52-47, but the Trailblazers would not be able to get any closer to the Cardinals lead. The Cardinals went onto win the game 85-75. The Cardinals only committed five turnovers in the game, while MCLA committed 17.
For the Cardinals, they placed four players in double figures led by Rafferty's team high 19. Kuo finished with 18 points and 8 rebounds, while BJ Davis collected 15 points and 5 assists. Nathan Krill ended with 10 points off the bench and Epps had 10 rebounds to lead the team.
For the Trailblazers, Paul was 9-18 from the floor for 24 points and added 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Sophmore Joe Wiggins added 13 points while Junior Careem Kirksey ended with 11. Junior Dakari Hannah Wornum came off the bench to tally 10 points, 16 rebounds, and 7 blocked shots.
The Cardinals next game is Saturday December 5th at 7 p.m. at Williams, while MCLA next plays Wednesday December 9th at 7:30 against WPI.
