On Sunday, Nov. 5, Wesleyan men's basketball Head Coach Joe Reilly held a free clinic in Silloway Gym for members of the surrounding community. The bleachers were pulled out and around 100 local youth coaches, parents, and players showed up to listen to Coach Reilly speak and watch the Cardinals go through a live practice.
Those who attended had the opportunity to watch the men's basketball team demonstrate 18 different on-court drills, observe Coach Reilly's teaching methods and ask questions after practice. They received an inside look at how Coach Reilly develops winning habits and how he strives to get the most out of his student-athletes.
The response from the clinic was extremely positive. Connecticut Basketball President Gary Collins said, "This was probably the most instructive—and important—session we've ever done as a League. This clinic perfectly balanced our commitment to teaching our student-athletes winning habits and developing exceptional basketball skills."
Coach Reilly mirrored the sentiment. "Wesleyan University and Cardinal basketball have always shared a strong connection with the local community. The Coaching Clinic was a great opportunity to give back to local coaches and players—I am extremely proud of the high character men in our program and it was great to showcase their effort and coachability. We received such a great response that we hope to make it an annual event."
The Cardinals kick off their season at home in the Herb Kenny Tip-Off Tournament on November 17th at 6 p.m. against Anna Maria.
