HADLEY, Mass. – Austin Hutcherson of the Wesleyan University men's basketball team was named the NESCAC Player of the Week, as selected by the league office and announced Monday. Hutcherson was terrific last week as he helped guide the Cardinals to back-to-back wins over top-25 opponents.

The 6-6 sophomore guard averaged 21.5 points and shot 91.7 percent from the line in wins over No. 6 Hamilton, 73-69, and No. 24 Amherst, 62-60, respectively. In the win over the Continentals, he dropped 32 points including 24 in the final 20 minutes to lead a late rally as the Cardinals overcame a 13-point second half deficit. Hutcherson scored 12-straight points—three 3-pointers followed by a 3-point play—to give Wesleyan a 66-61 lead with 3:18 remaining. He then sealed the win at the line by hitting both foul shots with five seconds remaining as Wesleyan won by four. He finished 9-of-10 from the charity stripe and 5-of-10 from behind-the-arc.
The following day, Hutcherson scored the game-winner against Little Three archrival Amherst. With the game tied at 60-60, he received the inbounds pass with 11 seconds remaining and drove the length of the floor. With two defenders on him, he hit a shot off the glass as his basket went through the net with 0:03.1 remaining. He finished the game with 11 points and four assists.
Hutcherson—the 2018 NESCAC Rookie of the Year—currently ranks second in the conference in scoring, averaging 20.3 points per game, and is shooting a league-best 89.8% (53-59) from the foul line. He has led the Cardinals to three-straight wins against top-25 teams, including back-to-back 30-point games against Middlebury (36) and Hamilton (32).
Wesleyan is back in action on Thursday, Jan. 17 and will play at non-conference foe Pine Manor. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
