HADLEY, Mass. – Freshman Walker Harris of the Wesleyan University men's ice hockey team was named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year, while teammate Chad Malinowski '19 garnered Second Team All-NESCAC accolades, as voted on by the conference coaches and announced by the league office Tuesday.
Harris, who hails from Boulder, Colo., is the first Cardinals player since 2006 to earn the honor and third overall, joining Will Bennett (2004) and Dallas Bossort (2006). The forward is tied for second among the league leaders in power play points (12), and ranks second on Wesleyan in scoring with 21 points on nine goals and 12 assists. He scored all nine goals during conference play, and tallied 19 points in 18 NESCAC games.
Malinowski, whose 19 points are third best in the league by a defenseman, has been a vital piece on the Cardinals' blue-line, which currently ranks fourth in the conference with a goals-against average of 2.40, and has helped the penalty kill unit rank tops in Division III as they have killed off 93.7% of opponent's power plays. The Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. native also ranks second on the team with 15 assists, and is fourth in scoring.
Harris and Malinowski have been key components in Wesleyan's excellent season, which has seen it increase its win total by 11 games from a year ago and make its first NESCAC Tournament since the 2013-14 season. The Cardinals will look to continue their success as they take on top-seeded Hamilton in the semifinals on Saturday, March 4th at 4:15 p.m.
