HADLEY, Mass. – Carter Hawthorne '19 of the fourth-ranked Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week, following his stellar performance this past weekend in which he helped guide the Cardinals to their second conference title in program history.
Hawthorne led the team with 11 points in two games, scoring four goals and dishing out seven assists as second-seeded Wesleyan cruised past fifth-seeded Tufts in the semifinals (17-12), and rallied to defeat sixth-seeded Middlebury in the championship game (9-8). In addition, he picked up nine ground balls.
In the Cardinals' convincing win against the Jumbos, in which they scored 14 goals in the first half, the sophomore attack totaled eight points off three goals and five assists. He also recorded four ground balls. The following game, in the NESCAC Championship, Hawthorne scored the game-tying goal with 8:48 remaining in regulation, and assisted on two others while racking up five ground balls.
Hawthorne recently reached the 100-career point milestone and has 114 through two seasons. He currently leads the NESCAC in assists (45) and ranks third in points (81).
Wesleyan, ranked No. 1 in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Poll and No. 4 in the USILA/NIKE Division III Coaches Poll, hosts New England College in the Second Round of the 2017 NCAA Championships on Wednesday, May 10 at 4:30 p.m.
