Men’s Swimming & Diving Grabs 13 Top-Three Finishes on Saturday

LEWISTON, Maine – Senior Ethan Chupp and junior Brandon Pearson of the Wesleyan University men's swimming & diving team finished first overall in the 1- and 3-meter diving events, respectively, on Saturday in Lewiston, Maine, as the Cardinals suffered a 177-119 setback to Trinity (Conn.) and a 184.50-106.50 loss to Bates.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Pearson, who registered a mark of 231.82 off the 3-meter board, also excelled in the 1-meter event during the season-opening meet, as he earned runner-up honors (231.82). Chupp grabbed second-place marks in the 3-meter event (218.03), as he posted a score of 234.60 off the 1-meter board.
  • During the 200-yard medley relay, the group of freshman Phillip Wong, junior Alex Kapphahn, senior Spencer Tang and sophomore Quinn Tucker worked together as a cohesive unit to compile a third-place finish with a time of 1:39.93.
  • Freshman Eric Lindheim-Marx did not waste any time announcing his arrival to the collegiate stage, finishing second overall in the 1,000 freestyle (10:15.30), while Tucker also notched runner-up acknowledgement in the 200 freestyle (1:46.91).
  • Wong was nothing short of sensational during his collegiate debut, as the Fort Lee, N.J. native finished second overall in the 200 IM (2:02.41), and third in the 200 backstroke (1:59.43) and the 100 backstroke (54.22).
  • Senior captain Max Distler started his season in style with a third-place effort in the 200 butterfly (2:05.01), while Kapphahn (22.33) and Tang (53.90) finished third overall during the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, respectively.

  • The Cardinals will be back in action again on Monday for their home opener against NESCAC-rival Amherst at 5 p.m. in Middletown, Conn.
