With All-American Steve Chen '18 overpowering his Stevens Tech rival at #2 singles, 6-1 6-2, and combining with Sam Rudovsky '16 at #3 doubles for a 8-0 sweep, Wesleyan, ranked 23rd nationally, posted a 7-2 victory over Stevens, ranked 25th in the country Sun., Sept. 20. It is the lone dual match of the fall for the Cardinals.
Also picking up wins for Wesleyan against Stevens in both singles and doubles was Dhruv Yadav '18 as he won 6-0, 6-3 at #4 and paired with Win Smith '18 at #2 doubles for an 8-4 victory. Wesleyan other three team points came from #3 Jake Roberts '17 (4-6, 6-3, 10-7), #5 Joachim Samson '19 (6-2, 6-2) and #6 Cameron Daniels '17 (6-1, 6-0).
The Cardinals' #1 player, All-American Michael Liu '17 faced another returning All-American from Stevens who was ranked 22nd in last year's individual rankings. Liu, ranked 26th, fell by a 3-6, 3-6 tally. He and #1 doubles partner Zacho Brint '16 also came up short, 3-8.
Next up for the squad was the ITA Regional Tournament, hosted by Williams, Fri.-Sun., Sept. 25-27. Wesleyan had five singles entries and a pair of doubles tandems involved. Chen nearly equaled his effort of a year ago when he reached the singles finals. This year he reached the semifinals with victories in his opening four matches, then fell by a 1-6, 6-3 score to eventual champion and second-seeded Noah Farrell of Middlebury.
The rest of Wesleyan's singles entries included Roberts, who went 2-1; Samson, who won his first match but then had to withdrawal; Liu, who went 1-1; and Yadav, who went 0-1.
Chen and Brint combined to go 1-1 in doubles while Yadav and Smith joined forces and went 0-1.
The Cardinals finish up fall action Fri.-Sun., Oct. 2-4 by cometing in the Quinnipiac Invitational.
