Wesleyan Cross Country Prepares for NESCAC Championships

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Wesleyan University men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Waterville, Maine this Saturday, October 29th to compete in the 2016 NESCAC Cross Country Championships, hosted by Colby College.

All 11 NESCAC teams will compete in the conference championship, with each school being allowed to race 12 athletes. The top-five finishers on each team will factor into the final team scores. The men's 8-kilometer race will begin at 12 p.m. and the women's 6-kilometer race will follow shortly after at 1 p.m.

After finishing sixth in last year's event, which was held at the Wes Fuhrman '05 Trails hosted by Wesleyan, the men's cross country team eyes a return to Nationals for a second consecutive season.

Senior Will Dudek has been one of the team's strongest runners throughout the year, winning the Wesleyan Invitational with a time of 20:31.51, while placing eighth at the Paul Short Run (24:53) in a field that featured Division I runners. He also finished fourth overall in the Little Three Championship with a mark of 25:32.90. Dudek placed 26th in last year's race with a time of 26:03.25. Fellow senior Reid Hawkins and junior Tate Knight will also look to have an impact for Wesleyan. Hawkins crossed the finish line in 25:34 at the Paul Short Run, while Knight finished a few seconds behind him with a mark of 25:44.

The women finished ninth overall a year ago at the NESCAC Championships and look to build on that performance. The Cardinals are led by seniors Molly Schassberger and Caroline Elmendorf. The duo has finished either first or second for Wesleyan in every race this season. Schassberger won the Wesleyan Invitational with a time of 18:22.47, while Elmendorf led the team at the Paul Short Run, crossing the line in 22:10. Rhoen Fiutak '19 will also look to be a factor in the race as she finished the Little Three Championship with a mark of 19:28.
