Cardinals Comeback Attempts Fall Short as They Drop a Double-Header to the U.S. Coast Guard

The Lead: The Wesleyan University softball team's impressive comeback attempts fell short as it dropped a hard fought double-header to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Thursday afternoon. 

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Bears got out to an early 2-0 lead after two innings.
  • Jenna Putala '20 scored in second to bring the Cardinals to within one.
  • Coast Guard plated four runs in the top of the third to make the score 6-1.
  • Rielly Wieners '18 launched a home run to left-center to bring Wesleyan to within four runs in the fourth.
  • Julie McDonald '18 singled and later crossed the plate in the fifth to bring the visitor's lead to 6-3.
  • Julia Ferris held the Cardinals scoreless the remainder of the game, and the Bears would win game one, 6-3.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Coast Guard opened the game with four runs in the top of the first.
  • Izzy Linzer '17 singled and came around to score in the bottom of the inning to make the score 4-1.
  • The Bears offense plated eight runs in the second to go ahead 12-1.
  • Not to be outdone, the Cardinals began their comeback in the bottom of the second. Putala singled and scored on a hit by Christina Zaccardi '17 to make the score 12-2. Later in the inning, McDonald cleared the bases with her first collegiate home run, as her grand slam to center brought the home team to withing six at 12-6.
  • Wieners and Rachel Kantor '19 each took pitches over the center field wall in the third to make the score 12-8.
  • A run in the fifth would give Coast Guard a 13-8 advantage.
  • Carly Hattman hit a sacrifice fly, and Kayla Sowers doubled home two runs sixth put the Bears up 16-8.
  • McDonald continued the comeback attempt as she doubled home two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the Coast Guard advantage 16-10.
  • Wesleyan continued to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the seventh as Hayley Lipson '20 hit her first collegiate home run, to bring the Cardinals to within three.
  • The comeback would stop there as the Bears would claim the 16-13 win. 

UP NEXT:

  • The Cardinals return to the diamond on Saturday, April 1st as they will host Little Three rival Williams College. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
