Women's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Middlebury, 69-57

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan University women's basketball team rallied in the third quarter, but Middlebury College prevailed in the final 10 minutes of regulation as the Cardinals lost 69-57 on Saturday afternoon in Silloway Gymnasium.

Three players scored in double-figures for Wesleyan—Olivia Gorman (14), Caleigh Ryan (11) and Katy O'Connor (10)—but the Cardinals dropped to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in league play. The Panthers received double-digit scoring efforts from five players as they improved to 12-0 and 2-0.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • It was a defensive battle early as Wesleyan trailed 12-7 with 2:47 on the clock.
  • The Cardinals rallied down the stretch of the first quarter and a layup by O'Connor with four seconds remaining capped off a 9-2 run as Wesleyan led 16-14 after 10 minutes of play.
  • The lead was short-lived, however, as Middlebury opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to go ahead 20-16.
  • Wesleyan was held scoreless until the 5:30 mark of the second as another layup by O'Connor cut the deficit to two.
  • Middlebury went on an 8-2 run to take a double-digit lead (30-20), but the Cardinals closed out the half with five unanswered as they trailed 30-25 at the break.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The third quarter went back-and-forth often.
  • Trailing 37-33, Wesleyan went on a 6-0 run as a jumper by O'Connor at the 3:20 mark put the home team on top for the first time since the end of the first quarter.
  • Middlebury responded with a run of its own, scoring eight of the next 10 points to go up four, but a layup by Ryan with 33 seconds on the clock cut the deficit to two as the Panthers held a 45-43 lead entering the fourth.
  • It was all Middlebury in the final 10 minutes of regulation.
  • A pair of free throws by Betsy Knox at the 1:31 mark capped off a 9-2 run as the Panthers led 62-49, essentially putting the game out of reach.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Tara Berger scored eight points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for Wesleyan. In addition to her 11 points, Ryan also grabbed seven boards and Ava Tompkins led the team in assists with a game-high six.
  • Colleen Caveney led all players with 15 points, while Maya Davis and Kira Waldman each scored 12, Alex Huffman dropped 11 and Knox added 10. Catherine Harrison controlled the glass and pulled in a game-high 14 boards, while Davis led the team with three assists.
  • Middlebury held a commanding 51-37 edge in rebounding. The Cardinals only went to the line eight times but finished 7-of-8 from the charity stripe.
