HADLEY, Mass. – First-year guard Caleigh Ryan of the Wesleyan women's basketball team was named the 2019 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, as voted on by the league's coaches and announced Wednesday by the conference office. Ryan is the second Cardinal to earn the award and first since 2006, joining Ali Fourney '09.
Ryan excelled in her first year donning the Wesleyan uniform. The 5-11 guard from New York nearly averaged a double-double with 10.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. She was a force on the offensive glass and finished second in the conference with 94 offensive rebounds. She also recorded 180 total rebounds to rank third, while her 7.2 boards per game were fourth-best. Ryan was exceptional on defense as well and ranked 11th in the NESCAC in steals (1.6 spg) and 27th in blocks (0.5 bpg).
Ryan recorded four double-doubles and three 20-point games this season and was named the NESCAC and NEWBA Player of the Week on Jan. 21 and Jan. 22, respectively. Her numbers also increased in conference games, as she averaged 12.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.8 steals, 1.5 assists, and 0.8 blocks per game in 10 contests.
She played a significant role in the team's success this year, in which the Cardinals qualified for the NESCAC Tournament for a second consecutive season and finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 14-11 overall record and 4-6 league mark.
