MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan University men's and women's crew teams will take to the water this weekend to open their 2016-17 seasons beginning Sunday, Oct. 2 with the Riverfront Recapture Regatta on the Connecticut River.
Both teams feature identical fall schedules, which will see three races each. Following this weekend's season-opener, the Cardinals return to the water Saturday, Oct. 22 for the two-day Head of the Charles Regatta on the Charles River in Cambridge, Mass., and will wrap up the fall season Saturday, Oct. 29 with the Head of the Fish Regatta at Lee's Park in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Last year, the men's team opened the season on a strong note by finishing first out-of-14 teams at the Textile River Regatta and ended the fall campaign with a second place finish (out-of-21 teams) at the Head of the Fish Regatta.
The women's squad enjoyed similar success, as it opened the year by placing second overall (out-of-16 teams) at the Textile River Regatta. The Cardinals would go on to finish 7th-of-32 at the Head of the Charles Regatta and 4th-of-16 at the Head of the Fish Regatta to wrap up the fall. The Wesleyan women's team is also coming off an impressive 2015-16 campaign in which its Varsity 8 boat earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships, and finished with a bronze medal – first at-large berth to win a medal in the history of the national postseason tournament.
The 2016-17 men's squad features five seniors, 11 juniors, 11 sophomores and 10 freshman, while the women's team will consist of eight seniors, four juniors, 14 sophomores and 10 freshman.
