Women's Hockey Eases Past Post 5-0

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan women's hockey team (7-12-1) triumphed 5-0 over Post (6-22-0) on Tuesday evening. The shutout was the fifth of the season for the Cardinals, as they held a commanding 48-10 shots advantage during the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wesleyan got off to a quick start, scoring just 2:52 into the game when Alicia Nickolenko intercepted a pass in transition, before blasting a shot from the right faceoff circle for the 1-0 edge.
  • The Eagles had a great chance to knot the game with 11:38 expired. Kendall Fitzgerald wrapped around the goal before sending a pass to Paige Dundas, but Dundas' one-timer from the doorstep was thwarted by Cardinal goaltender Sam Smith.
  • The Cardinal's extended their lead to 2-0 at the 17:20 mark when Ally Detre redirected an initial shot by Jackie Kilar, tucking the puck inside the left pipe.
  • Out of the intermission, Wesleyan increased its advantage to 3-0 with 1:52 expired when Allie Damren skated end-to-end before faking to her right and scoring blocker side.
  • Post looked to cut the deficit to 3-1 at the 4:59 mark, but Molly Brumfield's shot from point-blank was denied by Smith.
  • The Cardinals added a tally at the 13:18 mark when Cali Stevens found the back of the net from the slot on a power-play, making it 4-0.
  • In the third, Wesleyan scored its fifth and final goal when Sophia Marra found the upper left corner from the doorstep for her first career-goal.
  • The Eagles best chance to score came with 14:47 elapsed, but Smith made a sprawling save to deny Julia Schatz' chance, preserving the 5-0 shutout.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Smith was forced to make just 10 saves in goal to pick up the win for the Cardinals.
  • Kaitlyn Daly suffered the loss in net for Post, making 43 saves during the contest.
