AMHERST, Mass. – The Wesleyan women's hockey (8-15-1, 4-11-1) fell 2-1 at Amherst (12-10-2, 8-6-2) during its regular season finale on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals will be the eighth-seed in the upcoming NESCAC tournament and will head to No. 9 Williams, the top-seed, on Saturday for a quarterfinal contest at 3:00 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Mammoths had a great chance to get on the board with 9:39 expired, but Kaitlin Hoang's breakaway attempt was thwarted by Wesleyan netminder Allegra Grant.
  • Amherst opened the scoring at the 11:36 mark after Grant denied an initial shot by Katelyn Pantera. Jamie McNamara collected the rebound, tucking it inside far post for the 1-0 edge.
  • Out of the intermission, the Cardinals looked for the equalizer. During a power play with 8:57 expired, Alicia Nickolenko almost scored, but her one-timer from the right dot was denide by Amherst goaltender Anna Kruesel.
  • The Mammoths struck again with 11:32 expired in the second stanza. Emma Flynn collected her own rebound after her initial shot was denied by Grant, before she snuck the puck through the five-hole for the 2-0 advantage.
  • At the 3:43 mark of the third, Wesleyan cut the advantage to one (2-1). The Cardinals skated two-on-one before Nicholenko's shot was thwarted with a kick save by Kruesel, before Cali Stevens gathered the loose puck and found the back of the net.
  • In an effort to tally the equalizer, Wesleyan pulled Grant late, but the Mammoths were able to hang on for the 2-1 victory.
