IWLCA RELEASE

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Nina Labovich '16 and Leah Giacalone '17 of the Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team were named 2016 Division III All-Region selections, as announced Friday by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA).

Labovich and Giacalone were named to the Second Team in the Berkshire Region – joining seven others from the NESCAC – and are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced Wednesday, May 18.

Labovich concluded her stellar four-year career with an impressive senior season in goal. The senior, who started every game since the 2013 season, finished second in the NESCAC this year with a 128 total saves. Additionally, her 50.2 save percentage and 819:42 minutes logged in net both ranked fourth.

The Alexandria, Va. native also benefited from strong defensive play from junior defender, Giacalone. Together, the duo helped hold opponents to single digits in seven of their 14 games and on March 26, Wesleyan held Kean to a mere two goals as the Cardinals cruised to a 14-2 victory. Giacalone finished the season with seven caused turnovers and 16 ground balls.

Wesleyan concluded the 2016 season on a high note by defeating Connecticut College decisively on the road, 17-7, as it ended the year with a 5-9 overall record and 2-8 mark in the ultra-competitive NESCAC.
