Five Cardinals Compete at NEWA Futures Tournament

BRISTOL, R.I. ? Five members of the Wesleyan University wrestling team competed in the 2016 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Futures Tournament Sunday, hosted by Roger Williams University.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • After dropping his first match to DJ Tirelli of Johnson & Wales, Jonathan Oh '19 won two matches by pins in the 141-pound weight class. Oh pinned Brandon Abad of WPI in 4:06 and Juan Carlo Ochoa Montoya of Springfield College in 2:25, before losing to PJ Testino of Norwich University by technical fall, 16-1.
  • Robert Rosenberg '17 went 3-2 in the 149-pound weight class to finish fourth overall out of 18 competitors. He claimed a 2-0 decision over Max Valera of Springfield, a 3-1 sudden victory against the No. 2 seed, Christian Gosch of the Coast Guard Academy, and defeated fifth-seeded Jamiel Stapleton of Johnson & Wales, 10-7. Stapleton had four pins on the day including a pin over top-seeded James Knoeller of Roger Williams.
  • Also competing for Wesleyan were Shane Ross '19 at 133 pounds, Nick Taylor '19 at 149 pounds, and Matt Winchester '18 at 165 pounds.

UP NEXT

  • The Cardinals return to the mat Saturday, Feb. 27 to compete in the two-day Northeast Regional Championships hosted by Springfield College. Competition is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
