CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Devon Carrillo '18 of the Wesleyan University wrestling team competed at the 2016 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships Friday at Cornell College.

Carrillo competed in the 197-pound weight class, and was paired against eighth-seeded Dennis Melendez of Hunter College in the first round. Melendez edged Carrillo with a 9-7
decision.

In the night session, the sophomore dual-sport athlete faced Mason Baumgartner of Concordia (Wis.) University, who lost to top-seeded David Welch of Roger Williams University in the first round (5-0 decision). Despite a strong performance, Carrillo was edged by Baumgartner by a 10-8 decision as he was eliminated from the national postseason tournament.

Carrillo's impressive sophomore campaign comes to an end, as he finished the season with a stellar 15-4 overall record. He qualified for the national tournament after placing third overall at the NCAA regionals, despite entering the field as the fifth-seed. Carrillo also received the Gorrarian Award for most pins, as he totaled three in five matches.
