  • Wesleyan Wrestling Earns All-NEWA Honors and NWCA Scholar Awards

    Several members of the Wesleyan University wrestling team earned postseason awards this week as the New England Writing Association (NEWA) announced its end-of-the-year laurels. Highlighting the list for the Cardinals on the mat were All-NEWA selections Devon Carrillo ’17 and Carter Armendarez ’18, while Isaiah Bellamy ’18, Dominic Pirraglia ’18, Dylan Jones ’19 and James Matias ’19 were named Honorable Mention. Bellamy was also named a 2016-17 Scholar All-American, while the Cardinals as a team were honored with a NWCA Division III Scholar Team Award.
  • Carrillo Earns First Round Pin; Armendarez Upsets No. 5 Seed at NCAA Championships

    Devon Carrillo '17 and Carter Armendarez '18 of the Wesleyan University wrestling team both won their First Round matches at the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships Friday afternoon, but fell in the Quarterfinals during the night session.

    MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Senior Devon Carrillo and junior Carter Armendarez will compete in the two-day NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships held March 10-11 at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse will serve as the host.
  • Devon Carrillo ’17 Named Connecticut’s Male Athlete of the Year

    MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Dual-sport athlete and Middletown native, Devon Carrillo, has been named Connecticut’s 2017 Male Athlete of the Year, as voted on by the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance (CSWA). Carrillo will be honored at the CSWA 76th Annual Gold Key Dinner on April 30, 2017 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington, Conn. The dinner will begin at 4 p.m. WNBA guard Bria Holmes of the Atlanta Dream was selected as the Connecticut Female Athlete of the Year.
  • Carrillo and Armendarez Qualify for NCAA Championships

    Devon Carrillo ’17 and Carter Armendarez ’18 of the Wesleyan University wrestling team finished second at 197 and third at 149, respectively, to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships, as they helped guide the Cardinals to a seventh-place finish at the Northeast Regionals this weekend.

    Zack Murillo ’19 and Zach Turner ’20 of the Wesleyan University wrestling team won the 125- and 197-pound weight classes, respectively, Sunday afternoon at the 2017 NEWA Futures Tournament hosted by Johnson & Wales University.
  • Wesleyan Defeats No. 19 Centenary; Posts 3-0 Record on “Senior Sunday”

    On “Senior Sunday”, the Wesleyan University wrestling team excelled as it went a perfect 3-0 in its first and only home meet of the 2016-17 season as the Cardinals defeated WPI (23-15) and Norwich (32-12), and wrapped up the day with a 24-15 win over No. 19 Centenary.
  • Carrillo Ranked No. 3 Wrestler in the Country; Earns Conference Wrestler of the Week Honors

    MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Devon Carrillo '17 of the Wesleyan University wrestling team was named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Wrestler of the Week for his stellar performance on Saturday, Feb. 4, in which he helped lead the Cardinals to a 2-1 weekend. In addition, Carrillo moved up the individual rankings and is now the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the country at 197.
  • Wrestling Finishes 2-1 at SUNY Oneonta Quad Meet

    The Wesleyan University wrestling team, highlighted by senior Devon Carrillo’s 3-0 performance, went 2-1 on the day Saturday with wins over Williams (24-18) and SUNY Oneonta (22-21) in a quad meet hosted by the Red Dragons.

  • Wrestling Finishes Sixth Overall at NEWA Duals

    Entering the NEWA Duals as the No. 8 seed, the Wesleyan University wrestling team went 2-2 to finish sixth overall in the 16-team field, as Devon Carrillo ’17 was named to the NEWA All-Tournament Team. The Cardinals upset Little Three rival and No. 5 seed Williams in a thriller, 23-21, and defeated ninth-seeded Norwich, 23-21. The two losses came against eventual champion and top-seeded Johnson & Wales (47-4), and seventh-seeded Southern Maine (31-13).

    The Wesleyan University wrestling team, led by Devon Carrillo ’17, claimed third place at the Scott Viera Invitational Saturday with 92 points. Carrillo was crowned the 197-pound champion with a 13-6 decision over Cody Carrillo of Plymouth State in the finals, to finish a perfect 3-0 on the day
  • Wesleyan Places Five Wrestlers, Led by Murillo and Matias, as Cardinals Place Eighth at RIT Invitational

    Zack Murillo ’19 finished third overall in the 125-pound weight class to highlight the day for the Wesleyan University wrestling team at the RIT Invitational, in which the Cardinals finished eighth in the 12-team field Saturday.

    The Wesleyan University wrestling team finished fifth overall out of 16 teams Saturday at the Doug Parker Invitational. The Cardinals totaled 94 points, as James Matias ’19 highlighted the day with a second place finish in the 141-pound bracket.

    The Wesleyan University wrestling team opens its 2016 season Saturday, Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. as the Cardinals head to Roger Williams University for a 12-team tournament featuring four, top-10 nationally ranked teams – No. 2 Messiah College, No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology, No. 8 Roger Williams and No. 10 York College.
