Several members of the Wesleyan University wrestling team earned postseason awards this week as the New England Writing Association (NEWA) announced its end-of-the-year laurels. Highlighting the list for the Cardinals on the mat were All-NEWA selections Devon Carrillo ’17 and Carter Armendarez ’18, while Isaiah Bellamy ’18, Dominic Pirraglia ’18, Dylan Jones ’19 and James Matias ’19 were named Honorable Mention. Bellamy was also named a 2016-17 Scholar All-American, while the Cardinals as a team were honored with a NWCA Division III Scholar Team Award.

In addition, Carrillo moved up the individual rankings and is now the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the country at 197.
The Wesleyan University wrestling team, highlighted by senior Devon Carrillo’s 3-0 performance, went 2-1 on the day Saturday with wins over Williams (24-18) and SUNY Oneonta (22-21) in a quad meet hosted by the Red Dragons.
Entering the NEWA Duals as the No. 8 seed, the Wesleyan University wrestling team went 2-2 to finish sixth overall in the 16-team field, as Devon Carrillo ’17 was named to the NEWA All-Tournament Team. The Cardinals upset Little Three rival and No. 5 seed Williams in a thriller, 23-21, and defeated ninth-seeded Norwich, 23-21. The two losses came against eventual champion and top-seeded Johnson & Wales (47-4), and seventh-seeded Southern Maine (31-13).

The Wesleyan University wrestling team finished fifth overall out of 16 teams Saturday at the Doug Parker Invitational. The Cardinals totaled 94 points, as James Matias ’19 highlighted the day with a second place finish in the 141-pound bracket.

The Wesleyan University wrestling team opens its 2016 season Saturday, Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. as the Cardinals head to Roger Williams University for a 12-team tournament featuring four, top-10 nationally ranked teams – No. 2 Messiah College, No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology, No. 8 Roger Williams and No. 10 York College.
