MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Devon Carrillo '17 of the Wesleyan University wrestling team was named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Wrestler of the Week for his stellar performance on Saturday, Feb. 4, in which he helped lead the Cardinals to a 2-1 weekend. In addition, Carrillo moved up the individual rankings and is now the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the country at 197.
Carrillo was a perfect 3-0 during the quad meet Saturday, hosted by SUNY Oneonta. He helped guide Wesleyan to its second win this season against Little Three rival Williams, 24-18, as well as a 22-21 victory over the host school. The senior pinned Sebastian Dziadkiewicz of the Ephs in 1:19, and Peter Pjetri of the Red Dragons in 1:22. However, the highlight of the day came against Ithaca College, in which Carrillo defeated then-No. 3 ranked wrestler in the country and returning All-American, Carlo Toribio, 13-11.
The Middletown, Conn. native, who was also named an All-NESCAC football selection in the fall, is 13-0 this season with seven pins and three technical falls.
Wesleyan returns to the mats this Sunday, Feb. 12 and will host a quad meet featuring WPI (12 p.m.), Norwich (1:45/2 p.m.) and Centenary (3:45/4 p.m.).
