Wesleyan Wrestling Shines at NEWA Futures Tournament; Murillo and Turner Claim First Place Finishes

The Lead: Zack Murillo '19 and Zach Turner '20 of the Wesleyan University wrestling team won the 125- and 197-pound weight classes, respectively, Sunday afternoon at the 2017 NEWA Futures Tournament hosted by Johnson & Wales University.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Murillo went 4-0 on the day to take first place at 125. In the final match, he defeated Chris Gural of Roger Williams by an 8-6 decision.
  • Turner was perfect Sunday as well and went 3-0 to claim the 197 title. He earned a 4-3 decision over Ronnie Caudill in the championship match
  • In the 133-pound weight class, Tristan Stetson '20 took home third place as he went 3-1 on the day. In the third place match, Stetson pinned Kyle Goodell of Castleton University in 4:50.
  • Also competing on Sunday was Aaron Cranston '20 at 165, as he went 1-2 on the day.

UP NEXT:

  • The Cardinals return to the mats Saturday, Feb. 25 for the two-day Northeast Regional Championships hosted by Roger Williams University. The tournament begins at 11 a.m. both days.
