MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan University wrestling team is having an incredible 2017-18 season in large part to its dynamic duo of Devon Carrillo '17E and Isaiah Bellamy '18. The two have constantly dominated on the mats all season and currently rank No. 1 and No. 2 in the country, respectively, in pins.
Carrillo, in his third season with the program, has qualified for the NCAA Tournament the past two years and currently boasts an incredible 31-2 overall record. Most impressive are his 20 pins, which not only lead Division III but the entire country in all divisions. The top Division I wrestler has 15 pins while the top Division II wrestler has 14. The Middletown, Conn. native is also the No. 3 most dominant wrestler in D-III and is currently ranked No. 6 in the 197-pound weight class.
Bellamy has excelled in a breakout senior season in which he won his first 26 matches of the year. He currently owns an impressive record of 28-2 with 19 pins to rank second behind Carrillo. He is the No. 5 most dominant wrestler in D-III and as of Feb. 6, he was ranked the No. 4 heavyweight wrestler in the country.
The duo, both ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) rankings, will lead the Cardinals at the Northeast Regional Championships at WPI beginning Saturday, Feb. 24 and ending Sunday, Feb. 25.
