Wrestling Excels in First Tournament of 2019

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wesleyan University wrestling team opened the new year with a strong showing at the Scott Viera Open hosted by Roger Williams University on Sunday afternoon as the Cardinals led the way with six finalists; three champions, three runners-up, and a third and fourth place finish.

TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Highlighting the day for Wesleyan was Zack Murillo, Tristan Stetson, and Roy Forys. Murillo won the 125-pound title with a perfect 3-0 mark, Stetson went 4-0 to claim the 133-pound title, and Forys continues to excel as he won the 165-pound title with a 4-0 mark.
  • Amir Daouk, James Matias, and Simon Chee each placed second in their respective weight classes. Daouk went 2-1 at 125, Matias finished 3-1 at 141, and Chee went 3-1 at 197.
  • Rounding out the top performances on the day were Duncan Kreutter, Kasim Khan, and Aaron Goldman. Kreutter claimed third place at 184 as he finished 3-1 on the day, while Khan and Goldman placed fourth at 133 and 157, respectively. Khan went 2-2 on the day and Goldman finished 3-2.

  • Wesleyan is back in action next weekend for the two-day Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College beginning Friday, Jan. 11 and ending Saturday, Jan. 12.
