MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Senior Zack Murillo of the Wesleyan wrestling team will compete in the 2019 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships this weekend at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Va. The tournament will take place March 8-9, with action beginning on Friday at 11 a.m.
Murillo qualified for the tournament by placing second in the 125-pound weight class at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships. The senior from Southington, Conn. defeated the No. 7 wrestler in the country, Peter Del Gallo of Southern Maine, by a 2-1 decision in the semifinals. In the championship match, he was paired against the defending National Champion and No. 1 ranked wrestler in Division III, Jay Albis of Johnson & Wales. Murillo battled but was eventually edged by a 5-3 sudden victory decision in overtime.
Murillo is making his first NCAA Tournament appearance of his career. He has excelled all season and enters the weekend with an impressive 27-8 record with 16 wins by decision, four by pin, three by technical falls, and two major decisions. In his first match Friday morning, he will face the winner of Collin Wickramaratna (Ursinus) and Brady Kyner (Wartburg). If Murillo wins, he will advance to the quarterfinals Friday night. The loser will fall into the Wrestlbacks Bracket, and will wrestle Friday night as well.
