Several members of the Wesleyan University wrestling team earned postseason awards this week as the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) announced its end-of-the-year laurels and the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) released its academic honors. Highlighting the list for the Cardinals on the mat were First Team All-NEWA selections Devon Carrillo ’17 and Isaiah Bellamy ’18, and Honorable Mentions Amir Daouk ’20, Zach Murillo ’19, James Matias ’19, Carter Armendarez ’18 and Dominic Pirraglia ’18. In addition, six Cardinals were named 2017-18 NWCA Scholar All-Americans, 14 were named to the Academic All-NEWA Team, and Wesleyan earned a NWCA Scholar Team award.

Senior Isaiah Bellamy took third-place at 285 and graduate student Devon Carrillo claimed eighth at 197 as the Wesleyan University wrestling team finished 18th overall at the 2018 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at the Cleveland Public Auditorium. By placing in the top-eight, both wrestlers earned All-America status to mark the first time in program history that the Cardinals had two All-Americans in the same year. Additionally, Bellamy’s third-place finish is the highest all-time at the national tournament by a Wesleyan wrestler.
Senior Isaiah Bellamy and graduate student Devon Carrillo of the Wesleyan University wrestling team have advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2018 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, while senior Dominic Pirraglia has been eliminated from the postseason. Bellamy, who went 2-0 earlier in the day, and Carrillo, who won his lone afternoon match, will compete in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. in the Cleveland Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio.
Three captains of the Wesleyan University wrestling team—Isaiah Bellamy ’18, Devon Carrillo ’17E and Dominic Pirraglia ’18—have qualified for the 2018 NCAA Division III Wresting Championships which will take place Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10 at the Cleveland Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio. Baldwin Wallace University and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission will serve as the host for the national event.
Graduate student Devon Carrillo and senior Isaiah Bellamy of the Wesleyan wrestling team continued their dominance this weekend at the 2018 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships hosted by WPI as the duo claimed the 197-pound and heavyweight titles, respectively, to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. Additionally, senior Dominic Pirraglia qualified as well by taking third-place in the 174-pound weight class as the trio helped the Cardinals take third overall in the 17-team field.
The Wesleyan wrestling team will compete in the 2018 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships on Saturday, Feb. 24 and Sunday, Feb. 25 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in the Sports & Recreation Center.
