The Lead: The No. 23 Wesleyan University women's squash team defeated No. 26 Hamilton College Sunday, 6-3, to finish 2-1 at the two-day Pioneer Valley Invitational. It was the Cardinals' first win against Hamilton since the 1998-99 season.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Wesleyan won the No. 1 and 2 positions, as well as the No. 6-9 spots.
  • Laila Samy '18 and Abigail Smith '17 both swept their matches from the top of the lineup. Samy claimed the No. 1 position by scores of 11-0, 11-6, 11-6, and Smith claimed the No. 2 spot by wins of 12-10, 12-10, 11-9.
  • Josie Russ '20 and Sarah Clothier '19 each swept their opponents as well, as Russ took the No. 6 position decisively (11-2, 11-3, 11-2), and Clothier claimed the No. 7 position (11-4, 11-7, 11-6).
  • In the No. 8 position, Ale Lampietti '19 earned a thrilling 3-1 win by scores of 15-13, 9-11, 13-11, 11-6, and Sofia Melian-Morse '20 earned a 3-0 sweep by marks of 11-9, 11-6, 11-4.

  • The Cardinals return to action Saturday, Jan. 28 for the Little Three Championships against Amherst (10 a.m.) and Williams (1 p.m.) at Amherst.
