Cardinals Get Revenge, Defeat No. 20 Dickinson in Walker Cup, 6-3

The Lead: The No. 23 Wesleyan University women's squash team defeated No. 20 Dickinson College, 6-3 in the Consolation Semifinals of the Walker Cup Saturday morning. The Walker Cup is the "C" Division of the College Squash Association (CSA) National Team Championships.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Laila Samy '18, the 2017 NESCAC Women's Squash Player of the Year, continued her dominance with another 3-0 sweep in the No. 1 position with scores of 11-4, 11-4, 11-5 over Hedvika Suchankova.
  • Wesleyan also claimed wins in the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots.
  • Josie Russ '20 defeated Jaime-Leigh Edghill in the No. 4 position, 3-1 (11-8, 12-10, 9-11, 11-9).
  • In the No. 5 spot, Annie Ferreira '17 edged Alanis Perez in a five-set thriller by scores of 12-10, 9-11, 11-3, 8-11, 11-8, and Ali Imperiale '19 swept Abbie Wingerd in the No. 6 spot, 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 12-10).
  • The Cardinals picked up two more wins at the bottom of the lineup as Ale Lampietti '19 won 3-1 (9-11, 11-5, 11-5, 13-11) over Merritt Davis in the No. 8 position, and Sarah Clothier '19 earned a 3-0 (11-7, 12-10, 11-8) sweep over Patricia Francis-Hall in the No. 9 spot.
  • Wesleyan lost to Dickinson earlier in the year, 7-2.

  • The Cardinals advance to the Consolation Finals of the Walker Cup and will play St. Lawrence University tomorrow, Feb. 26 at 11:15 a.m.
