MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Five members of the Wesleyan University women's swimming & diving team were honored by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as they were named Scholar All-Americans. Additionally, both the men's and women's programs were named Scholar All-America Teams.
Zoe Kerrich '18, Grace Middleton '20 and Hannah O'Halloran '20 were all named Scholar All-Americans while Devon Cooper '19 and Maela Whitcomb '19 were both named Honorable Mention Scholar All-Americans. In order to be named a Scholar All-American, student-athletes must have achieved a GPA of 3.50 or above and achieved a "B" time standard or competed at an NCAA Regional or Zone Diving qualifier.
Kerrich, Middleton and O'Halloran were members of the 400 freestyle and 200 medley relay teams that excelled all season en route to qualifying for the NCAA Championships. At the national meet, the 400 free relay squad finished ninth overall with a school record time of 3:26.29. Kerrich's mark of 51.20 in the leadoff leg was also a school record. Additionally, the 200 medley relay squad placed 15th in the country with a mark of 1:44.83, while the team's time of 1:44.36 in the preliminaries was another program-best. Both relay teams earned All-America Honorable Mention.
Whitcomb excelled at the 2018 NESCAC Championships and posted an NCAA "B" time standard in the 1,650 freestyle with a mark of 17:31.43 to place eighth.
Cooper had an excellent junior season as well and qualified for the NCAA Division III Zone Diving Qualifier. At the NESCAC Championships, she broke a school record in the 1-meter dive with a total of 397.60 points to finish sixth overall.
Additionally, the men's and women's teams excelled as a whole to garner academic team praise, as the men finished with a 3.60 team GPA and the women recorded a 3.65 team GPA. The men had the third-highest GPA in Division III and the highest in the NESCAC, while the women had the 13th-best mark overall and second-highest in the conference. To be selected as a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, programs must have achieved a grade point average of 3.00 or higher during the Spring semester.
