MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — The Wesleyan University women's tennis was was solid from start to finish on Wednesday afternoon, cruising past No. 27 Bates, 9-0. The midweek encounter took place on a chilly spring day at Wesleyan's new outdoor tennis courts, where the Cardinals are undefeated so far.

In doubles, academic obligations kept senior Eudice Chong and freshman Alissa Nakamoto out of the lineup, so their usual partners teamed up instead. At No. 1, it was junior Victoria Yu and freshman Polina Kiseleva joining forces for the first time—and looking quite solid as they took down Maisie Silverman and Isabella Stone, the tenth-ranked doubles team in the Northeast, by an 8-1 score. Seniors Helen Klass-Warch and Nicole McCann, the usual No. 3 doubles team, moved up to No. 2 and had no trouble, winning 8-0. At No. 3, sophomore Julia Kim and freshman Daniela Alvarez completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory.

Singles was similarly one-sided in the Cardinals' favor. All six matches went to Wesleyan in straight sets.  At No. 1, the often-dominant Chong was pushed, but still came away no worse for the wear, taking her match 6-2, 6-3. At No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 singles, Wesleyan lost only two games per match. Yu was victorious 6-1, 6-1 while senior Aashli Budhiraja and Kiseleva both won 6-0, 6-2.  No. 5 and No. 6 singles was a family affair, as Helen and Zoe Klass-Warch '21 competed side-by-side, each earning a point for Wesleyan in hard fought matches. Helen, the senior, won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 while the freshman Zoe was not far behind in winning her match, taking it 6-3, 6-3.

The 9-0 win moves No. 5 Wesleyan to 8-1 overall this spring, with a 4-1 NESCAC record.
