No. 3 Women's Tennis Advances to NESCAC Semifinals, Defeats No. 6 Bowdoin, 5-2

ENFIELD, Conn. – The Wesleyan University women's tennis team returns to the NESCAC Semifinals for the second time in the past three seasons after defeating Bowdoin College in the First Round Friday morning, 5-2, inside the Enfield Tennis Club.

The Cardinals (12-2) are the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament, marking their highest seeding ever after posting a program record seven NESCAC victories during the regular season. Today's win marked their third-straight season with 12 wins, which is also a program-best. They will face the No. 2 seed, Middlebury, in the semifinals tomorrow at 9 a.m. 

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • No. 5-nationally ranked Wesleyan took a 2-1 lead after doubles play with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. The nation's top duo of Eudice Chong '18 and Victoria Yu '19 earned an 8-4 win at No. 1 over Tess Trinka and Izzy Essi of the 14th-ranked Polar Bears (9-12), while freshmen Polina Kiseleva and Alissa Nakamoto claimed their first NESCAC Tournament wins with an 8-3 victory at No. 2.
  • The Cardinals had to take 3-of-6 singles matches to secure the win, and they did so in the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 positions.
  • Yu won at No. 2 singles with back-to-back wins of 6-2, 6-2. Aashli Budhiraja '18 took the No. 3 spot by scores of 6-2, 6-4, and Nakamoto claimed No. 5 singles with marks of 6-3, 6-2.
  • Kiseleva held a 2-1 lead in the first set at No. 4 before the match concluded, and Chong held a 3-0 lead in the first set at No. 1 singles.
