MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Senior Steven Chen and junior Victoria Yu of the Wesleyan University men's and women's tennis teams were named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District At-Large First Teams for District 2 at the NCAA Division III level as announced by CoSIDA on Thursday.
This award is a combination of academic excellence and achievements on the athletic field. The selection process is divided into eight geographic regions across the United States and Canada. Chen was one of 12 Division III male athletes to earn this prestigious honor in District 2, and Yu was one of only 10 female athletes to be recognized.
Yu, who is majoring in chemistry, molecular biology and neuroscience & behavior, has maintained a 3.96 GPA, while Chen, a government and history major, has compiled a 3.85 GPA.
All First Team members, which includes Chen and Yu, will advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot. The First and Second Teams for Academic All-America will be made public in June.
Yu has combined for a 13-3 record in singles, playing primarily at No. 2, and owns a 16-1 mark at No. 1 doubles, as the No. 5-ranked women's tennis team will compete in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament against No. 4-ranked Middlebury on Monday in Claremont, Calif. The match will get underway at 6 p.m. ET.
Yu, a New Braunfels, Texas native, qualified on both the singles and doubles side for the NCAA Division III Individual Championships on May 24-26 in California, and will look to defend her doubles title with partner Eudice Chong '18.
Chen has accumulated a 10-6 record this spring in the top singles position for the men, and is 12-5 overall in doubles playing primarily in the No. 3 spot. The San Diego, Calif. native will represent the No. 12-ranked men's tennis team in singles action at the NCAA Individual Championships next week.
