  • Hilton Named AVCA Second Team All-American; Litinsky Earns Honorable Mention

    Nicole Hilton ’20 of the Wesleyan University volleyball team added another accolade to her incredible 2017 season as the sophomore outside hitter/middle blocker was named a Division III Second Team All-American, as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) on Tuesday. Additionally, Stasie Litinsky ’20 was named an Honorable Mention to mark the first time in program history that two Wesleyan athletes received All-America praise in the same season.
  • Historic Season Comes to an End, Volleyball Drops 3-2 Thriller to No. 8 Johnson & Wales

    The Wesleyan University volleyball team’s historic 2017 season came to an end Saturday night as the Cardinals dropped a thrilling 3-2 heartbreaker against No. 8 Johnson & Wales University in the regional semifinals of the NCAA Division III Championships. Wesleyan held a 2-1 lead in the match but the Wildcats rallied in the fourth and fifth sets to prevail and advance to the regional finals tomorrow, Nov. 12. They will face MIT at 2 p.m.

    The Wesleyan University volleyball team continues to roll as the Cardinals swept Wellesley College 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-22) in the first round of the NCAA Championships Friday night behind an all-around impressive performance in the Wildcat Center at Johnson & Wales University.

    The accolades continue to pile up for sophomores Nicole Hilton and Stasie Litinsky of the Wesleyan University volleyball team as the duo was named to the 2017 AVCA Division III Northeast All-Region Team on Thursday.
  • Hilton Named NESCAC Player of the Year; Litinsky and Bellizzi Earn All-Conference

    Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Hilton of the Wesleyan University volleyball team has been named the 2017 NESCAC Player of the Year to become the first Cardinal since 2008 to earn the award and the third overall joining Alexis Keeler ’02 (2001) and Lisa Drennan ’09 (2006, 2008). Hilton is also joined on the First Team by classmate and outside hitter Stasie Litinsky, while freshman libero Phia Bellizzi earned Second Team praise.
  • Volleyball to Play Wellesley in NCAA First Round

    The 2017 NESCAC Champions, the Wesleyan University volleyball team, will return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001 and just the second time in program history. The Cardinals will face Wellesley College who earned an at-large bid from the NEWMAC after losing to MIT in the conference championships.

    Nicole Hilton ’20 of the Wesleyan University volleyball team earned her second NESCAC Player of the Week honor this season as she helped guide the Cardinals to their first conference championship in program history. Wesleyan, seeded No. 2 in the tournament, defeated No. 7 Williams (3-0), No. 3 Bowdoin (3-1), and No. 1 Tufts (3-1) in three-straight days, respectively.
  • NESCAC CHAMPIONS! Wesleyan Rallies to Defeat Tufts, 3-1

    The Wesleyan University volleyball team won its first-ever NESCAC Championship on Saturday as the second-seeded Cardinals rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat top-seeded Tufts University 3-1 by scores of 22-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-14. With the win, the Cardinals automatically qualify for the NCAA Tournament and make their second appearance all-time in the postseason championships and first since 2001.
  • Volleyball Advances to NESCAC Finals! Rallies to Defeat Bowdoin, 3-1

    For the first time since 2001 and just the second time in program history, the Wesleyan University volleyball team returns to the NESCAC finals as the second-seeded Cardinals came-from-behind to defeat third-seeded Bowdoin College Saturday (3-1) by scores of 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-16 in the conference semifinals at Tufts. Wesleyan will play the Jumbos—the top-seed in the tournament—for a shot at its first-ever conference championship tomorrow at 12 p.m.
  • Cardinals Cruise Past Williams in NESCAC Quarterfinals, 3-0

    For the first time since 2008, the Wesleyan University volleyball team has advanced to the semifinals of the NESCAC Tournament as the Cardinals swept Little Three rival Williams Friday night by scores of 25-11, 25-14, 25-17. Wesleyan was impressive in victory, hitting .400 as a team as Harper Graves ’21 led the way with 15 kills and zero errors on 25 attempts for an incredible .600 attack clip. Additionally, Nicole Hilton ’20 registered 14 kills with just two errors for a .545 mark and Kaira Muraoka-Robertson ’20 dished out 37 assists.
  • Wesleyan Enters NESCAC Volleyball Championships as No. 2 Seed

    After posting an 8-2 record in conference play, including a 3-0 sweep over Bowdoin (8-2), the Wesleyan volleyball team secured the No. 2 seed in the 2017 NESCAC Championships hosted by top-seeded Tufts. The Cardinals, who are 18-5 overall and rank fourth in the New England regional rankings, will play Little Three rival and No. 7 seed Williams College Friday, Nov. 3 at 5 p.m.

  • Volleyball Falls to Tufts in Regular-Season Finale, 3-1

    In a NESCAC volleyball regular-season showdown Saturday between the league’s top two teams, Tufts University prevailed over Wesleyan University, 3-1 (19-25, 25-18, 27-25, 25-20). With the win, the Jumbos (20-5, 10-0 NESCAC) claim the No. 1 seed in the NESCAC Tournament and will host Friday, Nov. 3 through Sunday, Nov. 5. Despite the loss, the Cardinals put together one of their strong regular seasons in program history and clinch the No. 2 seed for the first time since 2008 and third time overall. Wesleyan is now 18-5 on the season and 8-2 in league play.

  • Wesleyan Volleyball: A Force to Be Reckoned With

    When Ben Somera took over the Wesleyan volleyball team in 2015, only two coaches had ever stepped foot in Silloway Gymnasium before him—Cathy Chu, who coached Wesleyan’s inaugural 1984 season, and Gale Lackey, who guided the Cardinals from 1985 all the way through the 2014 season. Somera inherited a team that hadn’t had a winning NESCAC record since 2008. In his first year, Wesleyan mustered a 1-9 conference record.
  • Hilton Named NESCAC Co-Player of the Week

    Sophomore Nicole Hilton of the Wesleyan University volleyball team was named the NESCAC Co-Player of the Week for her stellar performance in three matches, including two against nationally-ranked top-25 teams. Hilton averaged 2.91 kills per set with a .410 hitting percentage and was a force at net as well, averaging 0.91 blocks per set. She was joined by Caroline Flaharty of Bowdoin.
  • Wesleyan Splits Doubleheader against No. 19 Juniata and Susquehanna

    At the Wid Guisler Invitational hosted by No. 19 Juniata on Saturday, the Wesleyan University volleyball team split its doubleheader against the Eagles and Susquehanna. The Cardinals dropped a close three-set match to No. 19 Juniata early in the day (25-23, 25-23, 25-22) but came back with a vengeance, triumphing over Susquehannah 3-1 (25-13, 19-25, 25-16, 25-18). Wesleyan is now 17-4 on the season.

    In a thrilling non-conference volleyball matchup against two of the top teams in the New England region, No. 14 Johnson & Wales University prevailed over Wesleyan University 3-1 by scores of 25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19. Thursday night’s match was the first-ever meeting between husband and wife head coaches Ben and Nancy Somera.

    For 12 years, Nancy and Ben Somera coached together at various stops along their career. However, Thursday night will be the first time the two have been on opposite sides of the net as No. 14 Johnson & Wales, coached by Nancy, visits Ben’s Wesleyan team. JWU is first in the recently released NCAA New England Region rankings and Wesleyan is third.
  • NESCAC Unbeaten Streak Comes to an End as Volleyball Loses to Bates, 3-0

    The Wesleyan University volleyball team dropped its first NESCAC match of the season Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals fell to Bates College 3-0 by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-23. The loss also snapped an eight-match win streak for Wesleyan, who is now 16-2 overall and 7-1 in league play. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 10-8 overall and 3-5 in the conference. Despite the loss, the 16-2 start is the second-best in program history for the Cardinals. Only the 1989 team posted a better record through its first 18 games, as they went 17-1.

    The Wesleyan University volleyball team won its eighth consecutive match Friday night as the Cardinals swept NESCAC foe Colby College by scores of 25-14, 25-19, 25-14. Win the win, Wesleyan improves to 16-1 overall, while remaining undefeated in conference action with a 7-0 mark. The Mules drop to 3-12 on the year and 0-7 in league play.

    Trailing 2-0 on the road against the defending NESCAC Champions, the Wesleyan University volleyball team battled back to claim a thrilling 3-2 win against Middlebury College Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals won by scores of 19-25, 11-25, 25-19, 25-19, 16-14 to snap the Panthers’ 10-match win streak.

    The Wesleyan University volleyball team won its first Little Three title since 1992 on Saturday, as it swept archrival Amherst College by scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-14. Later in the day, the Cardinals defeated Stevens Institute of Technology in four sets (25-18, 30-32, 25-10, 25-23) to conclude the doubleheader sweep.

The Cardinals, who improve to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in the NESCAC, won by scores of 25-14, 25-20, 25-18 to drop the Bantams to 6-5 overall and 0-3 in league play.

The Cardinals lost their first match of 2017 in the first contest of the day against No. 9 Juniata, 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-16), but responded with a thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 24 Christopher Newport (25-22, 20-25, 20-25, 25-18, 16-14).

Wesleyan is now 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference, and have not lost a set all season. With the loss, the Camels drop to 6-3 on the year and 0-3 in league play.

    Sophomores Stasie Litinsky and Nicole Hilton recorded 11 kills each with a .769 and .643 hitting percentage, respectively, while classmate Kaira Muraoka-Robertson dished out 40 assists to lead the Wesleyan University volleyball team to its seventh-consecutive win Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-12) sweep of Hamilton College.
