HADLEY, Mass. – Sophomore defensive specialist Phia Bellizzi and junior outside hitter Mia Hogan of the Wesleyan University volleyball team have been named to 2018 All-NESCAC Teams, as voted on by the league coaches and announced Wednesday by the conference office. Bellizzi was named a First Team selection and Hogan garnered Second Team laurels.
Bellizzi, a Second Team selection as a freshman a year ago, earns her second all-conference honor of her career. This season, the Ladera Ranch, Calif. native is averaging 5.94 digs per set to lead the NESCAC and rank 12th in the country. She also sits second in the league in total digs with 475, and recently surpassed the 1,000-career mark – she now has 1,032 digs in two seasons with the Cardinals.
Wesleyan boasts the league's top defense, which has been led by Bellizzi's strong play all year round. The Cardinals rank first in the NESCAC in digs per set (19.99) and are also third in blocks per set (1.75).
Hogan is enjoying a breakout campaign in her third season at Wesleyan. The all-conference honor is the first of her career as the Belmont, Calif. native ranks second on the team and 13th in the NESCAC in kills per set (2.77). She is hitting .249 this season and is averaging 1.03 digs and 0.43 blocks per set. In a very well-balanced offense, Hogan has posted double-digit kills in 10 matches this season.
Bellizzi and Hogan have played a pivotal role in the team's success thus far as Wesleyan earned an at-large bid to the 2018 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championships. It's the second consecutive postseason berth for the Cardinals and third overall. Wesleyan will face Kean College (N.J.) on Friday, Nov. 9 at 12:30 p.m. on the campus of Johnson & Wales in Providence, R.I.
