A small group of Wesleyan cross country runners traveled to Williamstown, MA on Saturday, November 7th, for the ECAC Championships. The NESCAC schools, including Wesleyan, generally rest their top seven runners this weekend and send their sub-varsity teams to compete at ECAC's, but most other schools send their varsity squads. It was a breezy, overcast morning at Mount Greylock high school, with temperatures in the 50's.
The women's 6000m race began at 11am. The Wesleyan women were represented by Katie Scruggs '17 (Vail, CO/Vail Mountain School) and Carina Flaherty '19 (Philadelphia, PA/JP Masterman). In a field with 311 finishers, Sruggs ran 24:56.50 for 57th place and Flaherty ran 25:49.04 for 104th place.
The men's 8000m race followed at noon and went out hard from the gun. The Cardinals' sub-varsity group was led by Shota Nakamura '19 (Scarsdale, NY/Edgemont), who took 72nd place in 28:29.21. Josh Signore '19 (Bristol, CT/Bristol Central) and Henry Vansant '18 (Thetford, VT/Kimball Union Academy) finished close together, with Signore running 29:10.45 for 106th and Vansant running 29:13.12 for 108th. Riley Hawkins-Hecock '19 (Lynden, WA/Meridian) had a particularly strong race, running 29:44.31 for 138th. Frank Tucci '19 (Hartford, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) rounded out the scoring five for Wesleyan, taking 172nd place in 30:39.61. With 278 finishers in the race, the top four Cardinals all finished in the top half of the field. Wesleyan's five-man team took 21st place out of 40 complete teams.
