Wesleyan Athletics Giving Days 2019 is Coming

Wesleyan Athletics Giving Days 2019 is Coming

The third annual Wesleyan Athletics Giving Days (WAGD) is quickly approaching! WAGD is a competitive fundraising initiative bringing together donors in support of Wesleyan Athletics. For three days, athletic teams will compete for the greatest percentage of donor participation for their sport. At the end of the competition, the highest scoring team – one men's and one women's – each wins $5,000 for their most critical needs.

This year's WAGD runs from February 11-13, 2019. During this three-day period, donors can make a gift online or over the phone at 860-685-2110. These donations increase their team's overall participation percentage, which moves them up in the leaderboard rankings. The WAGD website, along with our Wesleyan Athletics' social media accounts, will be updated at the conclusion of each day.

It's all about who gets in the game, not how much you give!

In addition to the winning men's and women's teams scoring $5,000 for their individual team, if the number of donors exceeds 900 (300/day), an extra $5,000 will be unlocked for Athletic Communications enhancements.

Director of Athletics Mike Whalen comments, "The mission of Athletic Communications is to promote all of our Wesleyan Athletic programs. Having an extra $5,000 to put towards a professional sports camera or adding more live video of games, would go a long way in helping the office continue showcasing our programs to all of our various audiences."

Last year, Men's Tennis and Volleyball were atop their respective leaderboards at the end of the WAGD campaign.

"Now in its third year, WAGD is becoming a great annual tradition in Wesleyan Athletics," said tennis head coach Mike Fried. "This event allows alumni, friends and family to show their support for the Cardinals and allows us to fundraise for items required to excel at the highest level. Wesleyan Athletics is truly one big family, and your support is shared in all of our successes."

Added head volleyball coach Ben Somera, "The donations we received from WAGD allow us to improve the student-athlete experience in our program on the road and in our own gym. These gifts allow us to provide meals, apparel and video equipment that make it possible to pursue championships. Last year we were able to upgrade our video system, which allowed our athletes and staff to quickly evaluate our team systems and individual skills throughout the season."

Last year's initiative fostered over 1,500 donations, which unlocked a bonus $5,000 for the Sports Medicine department.

"Support of Athletic Training operations through WAGD last year was very significant," said head athletic trainer Joe Fountain. "The impact can be seen when you walk into the training room, as we received a new cold tub, ice machine and tabletops from the money that was unlocked. These improvements benefit all of our athletes. The effect of the support of Sports Medicine is egalitarian and promotes athletes from all of our teams to maintain their health and coalesce on the greater team known as Wesleyan Athletics."
