MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The 25th-ranked Wesleyan University women's squash team swept No. 29 Vassar College, 9-0, before falling short to No. 23 Tufts University, 5-4, Saturday afternoon at the Rosenbaum Squash Center. The Cardinals are now 6-12 overall in dual-matches this season.
VASSAR HIGHLIGHTS
- The Cardinals swept eight of the nine positions en route to the decisive victory.
- At the top of the lineup, Laila Samy '18 earned a 3-0 win by scores of 11-3, 11-0, 11-7.
- Liza Bayless '16 took a 2-0 (11-6, 11-8) lead before dropping game three (12-10). However, the senior rallied in game four to an 11-9 victory.
- Bridget Doherty '16 earned wins of 11-8, 11-3, 11-4 in the No. 3 position.
- The middle of the lineup featured sweeps from Tatum LeClair '18, Abigail Smith '17 and Ali Imperiale '19 from the No. 4 (11-6, 11-8, 15-13), No. 5 (11-6, 11-6, 11-3) and No. 6 (11-3, 11-2, 11-1) positions, respectively.
- Annie Ferreira '17, Ale Lampietti '19 and Ellen Paik '16 claimed wins in the bottom of the lineup. Ferreira swept court No. 7 (11-6, 11-5, 11-9), Lampietti took the No. 8 position (11-4, 11-6, 11-2) and Paik claimed the No. 9 spot (11-4, 12-10, 11-6).
TUFTS HIGHLIGHTS
- Wesleyan took the top three positions, as well as the No. 7 spot.
- Samy claimed another 3-0 (11-0, 11-1, 11-4) sweep from the No. 1 position, Bayless earned a 3-1 (11-5, 11-8, 4-11, 11-7) win on the No. 2 court, and Doherty swept the No. 3 spot (13-11, 13-11, 11-9).
- Trailing 2-0 in the match, Smith responded with consecutive wins of 11-9, 11-3, before dropping the decisive fifth game.
- In the No. 7 position, Ferreira claimed a 3-1 win by scores of 12-10, 5-11, 11-8, 11-8.
- Paik dropped a thriller on the No. 9 court by scores of 12-10, 4-11, 11-5, 4-11, 5-11.
- Wesleyan and Tufts met last week in the NESCAC Championship as well, with the Jumbos claiming a 5-4 win.
