CLINTON, N.Y. – The Wesleyan men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the new year with a dual meet at Hamilton on Saturday afternoon. The men's team fell to the Continentals 137-124, while the women were topped by Hamilton 163-113.
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS:
- Mengmeng Gibbs shined for the women, winning the 50-yard and the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 31.52 and 1:09.02, respectively. She also placed second in the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:02.42.
- First-year Zoe Paglia won off the 1-meter board and off the 3-meter board with 211.30 points and 231.50 points, respectively.
- Amanda McHugh earned first place honors in the 100-yard fly with a time of 1:02.32 and placed second in the 50-yard fly (28.60), while rookie Sarah Schou took the top spot in the 50-yard fly with a time of 28.51.
- The 200-yard medley relay comprised of Caroline Murphy, Gibbs, Grace Middleton and Hannah O'Halloran placed second with a time of 1:51.64 just behind Hamilton (1:51.18).
- The 200-yard freestyle relay (Hannah O'Halloran, Schou, Heddy Parker and Middleton) earned second place with a time of 1:45.78.
- Other second-place finishes came from Talia Lancton off the 1-meter (185.40 points) and the 3-meter (173.65 points), Murphy in the 50-yard backstroke (28.40) and Middleton in the 50-yard free (25.63) and the 100-yard free (56.52).
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS:
- In a close 200-yard medley relay, Wesleyan's squad (Richard Ettinger, Jeremy Kim, Eric Tran and Aidan Hood) edged Hamilton by less than one second to claim the top spot with a time of 1:40.29.
- Ettinger placed first in the 50-yard backstroke with a winning time of 25.52, while Tran earned the top spot in the 100-yard fly (53.39). Joel Groves won off the 1-meter and the 3-meter with 172.00 points and 171.40 points, respectively.
- Mason Polaner placed first in the 500-yard free with a time of 4:59.71 and earned second in the 200-yard free (1:48.15) and the 50-yard free (22.98).
- Second-place finishes also came from Justin Sheen in the 50-yard breaststroke (28.62), Jeffrey Haegelin in the 100-yard fly (55.13), Ettinger in the 100-yard back (54.88) and Tran in the 50-yard fly (24.60).
