MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Sophomore Marco Gaita of the Wesleyan wrestling team will compete in the 2020 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships this weekend at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The tournament is scheduled to take place Friday, March 13 to Saturday, March 14.
Gaita qualified for the tournament by winning the 174-pound title at the Northeast Regional Championship. The New Jersey native claimed the title by earning a 3-2 decision over Arthur Aeberli of Coast Guard in the finals. His road to the championship match featured a first round pin (3:54) over Raul Gierbolini of Southern Maine, a major decision (9-1) victory over Chance LaPier of Castleton, and a win by decision (3-2) against Izaake Zuckerman of New York University.
The sophomore has excelled all season and enters the tournament with an incredible 32-4 overall record with eight pins. He secured the No. 7 seed in the 174-pound bracket and earned a first round bye. He will face the winner of Dominick Esposito (Merchant Marine) and Evan Lawrence (Wisconsin-Eau Claire).
