MANCHESTER, Conn. – In what was quite the resounding start to the season, the Wesleyan women's cross country team opened 2021 with a first place finish out of seven teams at the Trinity Invitational at Wickham Park on Saturday morning.
Miranda Graves '23 was the fastest on the day, taking first in a field of 73 competitors.
Emma Trapani '21, P'22 and
Sara Greene '23 joined Graves as Wesleyan placed three runners in the top four.
A monumental achievement for Wesleyan in the season opener, this first place result marked the first time Wesleyan has finished first in a field with seven or more teams since the 2012 Wesleyan Invitational.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Graves shined in the season debut as she clocked in at 20:12.5, a new personal-best for in a 5k for the junior. This is Graves' first Top 10 finish of her career as her previous-best individual finish was 20th in the 2019 Little 3 Championship
- Trapani clocked in at 20:37.6 to take the runner-up finish behind Graves
- Greene was fourth overall with a time of 21:01, just 0.3 seconds behind third place finisher Haley Nilsson of Tufts
- The Cardinal depth continued to impress as Sophie Scobell '22 (21:46) finished 10th and was closely followed by Itzel Valdez '23 (22:00.6), Nora Markey '22 (22:04.6) and Mia Clark '25 (22:07.8) to complete the Wesleyan scorers in the season opener
NEXT GAME:
Wesleyan looks to carry this momentum into the Little 3 Championship meet on Saturday, Sept. 18 with Williams playing host. The Cardinals finished second in the 2019 annual meet and are looking for their first Little 3 title since 1986.
