Wrestling Takes Ninth Place at NEWA Duals Championship

Cardinals win three straight matches to win the consolation bracket

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wesleyan wrestling team won the consolation draw, which was good enough for ninth place overall, at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals Championship on Sunday at the Springfield College Field House.

Wesleyan dropped their opening match to Trinity in a 25-14 defeat but rebounded with three straight wins in the consolation side of the bracket to take ninth place. The Cardinals opened their three-match run with a 43-3 win over Plymouth State before defeating WPI 26-12 and finishing off the consolation bracket with a 30-21 victory over Rhode Island College. For his efforts on the day, Shailen Savur '25 was named to the NEWA Duals All-Tournament Team. In a tight match against the Bantams that could have gone either way, Wesleyan suffered a 25-14 defeat as a pair of tight decision victories for Trinity (one in extra time, the other by one point) swung six points in favor of the Bantams that proved the difference in the end. Greg Fischer '23 started the day off with a 12-0 major decision win at 125 while Savur started his day with a 5-2 decision victory at 133 over Matthew Carrozza. Coming off his NEWA Wrestler of the Week award, Aaron Goldman '23 took down Nico Patch by an 8-5 decision at 157 while Marco Gaita '23 defeated Adam Forst at 174 by a 12-3 major decision. The match was decided at 149 as Christopher Perry took down Jack Wemmlinger '24 in a 5-3 sudden victory and at 184 as Cooper Kelley defeated Joe Colon '25 by a one-point margin.

Shaking off the defeat, Wesleyan coasted to a 43-3 win over Plymouth State that included two technical fall wins (Goldman and Gaita) while the Cardinals won four matches by forfeit. Fischer won his match at 125 by a 7-1 decision and Colon defeated Christian Kuechler in a high-scoring 13-12 decision at 197.

Wesleyan's match against WPI was a come-from-behind win as the Engineers won four of the opening six bouts before the Cardinals rattled off four straight wins in the 174, 184, 197, and 285 weight classes to take the overall victory. Savur continued his strong start to the day with a 7-3 win over Connor Doran at 133 while Wemmlinger won by a 9-0 major decision at 149. The late run started with Gaita landing an 11-2 major decision victory at 174 before Aris Dashill '25 also won by major decision (14-1) at 184. Dean Omirly '25 dominated his match at 197, landing a 16-1 tech fall victory to seal Wesleyan's victory before Gagnon won by forfeit.

The consolation bracket came down to a match against Rhode Island College that featured seven pinfall victories between the two teams in a high-scoring 30-21 Cardinal victory. Wesleyan landed four wins by pin including Kellen Horst '26 at 141, CJ Shea '25 at 149, Gaita at 174, and Omirly at 197. The remaining two bouts the Cardinals won included a 5-2 decision victory for Savur over Jacob Duval while Dashiell defeated Matt Myers by a 7-3 decision at 184.

The Cardinals are set for two dual matches next weekend, starting with a trip back to Springfield to take on the Pride at 7:00 PM on Friday. Wesleyan then returns home to take RIC in a rematch of the consolation bracket title match on Saturday at 7:00 PM in what is the first of three straight home matches for the Cardinals.
