Wrestling Competes Against Williams, Oneonta, and No. 9 Ithaca in Home Quad Meet

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan wrestling team hosted a quad meet for the first time since 2018, as the Cardinals welcomed Williams, Oneonta, and No. 9 ranked Ithaca to the Bacon Field House on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Cardinals (7-9) dropped all three duals on the day, falling in the first match to the Ephs 22-11. In a tight decision that came down to the final bout, Wesleyan fell to Oneonta 27-20. And in the nightcap, the Cardinals were downed by No. 9 nationally ranked Ithaca 30-15.
 
Williams 22, Wesleyan 11 | RESULTS
 
The Ephs set the tone with a pair of wins at 125 and 133 before Max Martinez '25 responded with the first Cardinal win of the day, defeating Donnie Morton in a 4-1 decision. Where the match was won was in the middle weight classes as Williams swept 149, 157, and 165, all by decision victories including two by three points or less.
 
Marco Gaita '23 kept Wesleyan in the match with a 10-2 major decision win at 174 but Dante Gutbrod defeated Aris Dashiell '25 by a 4-3 score at 184 to put the Ephs back in control. Even with Dean Omirly '25 defeating Tommy Goodwin by major decision at 197, the Ephs still led by eight points in the team scoring and thus, secured the match victory.
 
Oneonta 27, Wesleyan 20 | RESULTS
 
The Cardinals again dug a big hole in the lightweight classes, this time trailing 15-0 after just three bouts as Oneonta secured back-to-back pins to take a commanding lead. Wesleyan, however, came storming back with four straight victories, to take a 17-15 lead.
 
Jack Wemmlinger '24 started the rally with a tech fall win over Andy Klosner at 149 before Goldman won by decision at 157, Reusing pinned Adonis Morano at 165, and Gaita toppled Kenny Sauer by decision at 174.
 
The Dragons retook the lead thanks to a pin at 4:50 from Jack Ryan and after Omirly defeated Noah Kennedy by decision at 197, the two sides were just one point apart. Needing a win in the 285 match, Kolton Gagnon '25 tried his best to score but was ultimately pinned at 3:58 as Oneonta landed the 27-20 victory.
 
No. 9 Ithaca 30, Wesleyan 15 | RESULTS
 
In the last match of the day, the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead with Greg Fischer '23 winning in sudden victory, 5-3, over Francisco Muriel at 125. Martinez won his match at 141 by forfeit, giving the Cardinals an early 9-6 lead, but Ithaca won the next three bouts to retake a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
 
Gaita broke the Bombers' win streak with a 6-2 decision victory over Conrad Parker, giving Gaita a perfect 3-0 record on the day at 174. Dashiell won his first match of the quad meet, defeating Tony Giovagnoli in an 8-1 decision to give Wesleyan hope of an upset.
 
But the match was decided in the next bout as Eze Chukwuezi pinned Omirly in just 45 seconds to secure the win for Ithaca.
 
Wesleyan closes out its dual match season next Saturday with a showdown against Centenary in the Bacon Field House starting at 1 PM.
