Women’s Track & Field Competes at the J Elmer Swanson Spring Classic

Cardinals end day with 19 top five finishes

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan women's track & field team competed in their first home meet of the outdoor season, competing against 12 other institutions on The Andersen Track Sunday morning through the afternoon. A plethora of Cardinals finished the day with top 10 finishes, including 19 top five placements and seven 1st place finishes.  
The Cardinals sprinters were impressive on Sunday, with a handful of top 10 finishes that also included victories in the 400 meters and 400 meter hurdles. Rex Beaver '26 started the day off by finishing 4th in the 100 meters with a time of 13.06 while Sophia Mack '26  had a strong showing in the 200 meters (26.81), as the only Cardinal to crack the top 10 at 4th. 400 meters was definitely the most comfortable sprinting distance for the Cardinals on the day, with two top-five finishes in both the 400 meter sprint and the 400 meter hurdles. Sarah Schlosberg '25 claimed victory in the 400 meters, crossing the line at 1:01.89 for the Cards first victory of the day. Augusta Burhans '23 followed in right behind her at 1:03.72 which was good for 3rd. In the 400 m hurdles, Kate Hausladen '23 took first with a time of 1:09.38 followed by her teammate Imagen Walters '26 who came in 4th (1:11.99). The 4 x 400 relay teams also shined, finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the event with times of 4:08.95, 4:11.99, and 4:14.94.

The middle distance and distance events were also controlled by the Cardinals, who ended the day with 10 top-10 finishers in those three events (800m, 1500m, 3000m). It started with Grace Devanny '23, who continues her impressive senior campaign with a 1st place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:16.12 that finished a full 16 seconds ahead of the pack. The Cardinals also took 2nd, 3rd and 6th in the 800m, with times of 2:32.48 by Kenzie Kelly '25, 2:35.15 by Jane Kakalec '26, and 2:39.11 by Maya Nikoukari '26. The Cards claimed the top two spots in the 1500m as well, with Maeve Hoffman '23 (4:46.38) and Jordan Walter '24 (4:47.97) both over 10 seconds ahead of the 3rd place finisher.

The Cardinals continued their impressive showing in the distance events with six top 12 finishers in the 3000m. Jane Hollander '23 was able to secure the victory with a time of 10:17.70 followed by Stephanie Ager '26 in 3rd (10:22.40), Nadia Lim '26 in 7th (10:48.21), Cornelia Carragher '25 in 8th (10:54.53), Quinn Meinhardt '24 in 11th (11:39.96), and Sara Greene '23 in 12th (11:41.77) out of 23 competitors.The Cardinals also showed out in the field events with six top-10 finishes. Wesleyan took 1st and 2nd in the pole vault, with Fiona Carroll '25 and Erika Kluge '23 both clearing 3.10 meters. The Cards had two top-10 finishes in the shot put as well, with Claire Edwards '24 claiming 8th with a distance of 10.09m and Beaver claiming her 2nd top 10 finish of the day with a distance thrown of 9.96 which was good for 9th out of the 29 competitors. Emilia Thornton '24 and Chiara Christie '23 shined in another throwing event, taking 3rd and 7th in the Javelin with distances of 29.59 and 28.14 meters.    

Wesleyan women's track and field will compete again next weekend , April 1st, where they will compete in the Tufts Snowflake Classic in Medford, Massachusetts.
