FAIRFAX, Va. – Gernald Hawkins '18 of the Wesleyan University football team received the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports-Scholar Award certificate from Diverse: Issues In Higher Education for his outstanding academic and athletic achievement.
In 1992, Black Issues In Higher Education magazine, now Diverse, established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who exemplify the standards set by tennis great, Arthur Ashe, Jr.
To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities. The NCAA Office of Inclusion has partnered with Diverse to support the standout class of scholar-athletes. Approximately 1,000 male and female students from across the country were nominated.
Hawkins, a sophomore dual-threat quarterback, was also named a NESCAC Fall All-Academic selection earlier this year. On the field, he played all eight games behind center and finished with 1,031 yards passing and four touchdowns, and 353 yards rushing with one touchdown.
