BOSTON, Mass. – Senior offensive lineman Joe Wilson of the Wesleyan University football team has received the 73rd annual Swede Nelson Award by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston. The Nils V. "Swede" Nelson Award honors a Division I and Division II/III athlete from New England for their exceptional achievement in sportsmanship, academics, and athletics.
Wilson is the first-ever Wesleyan athlete to receive the award. Boston College defensive end Zach Allen won it from the Bowl Championship Division. Wilson and Allen will be honored at the Gridiron Club's annual Bob Whelan College Football Awards Night on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at the Marriott Hotel in Burlington, Mass. Social hour begins at 6 p.m. with dinner and the program starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $75 each and may be ordered online at www.gridclubofgreaterboston.com or by calling call club secretary/treasurer Dick Lawrence at (781) 929-3650.
In addition to the Swede Nelson Award, Wilson also earned Google Cloud Academic All-District® First Team honors last week and was named a Second Team All-NESCAC (Offense) selection earlier today.
Wilson has been named an Academic All-District First Team selection two years in a row. The honor, which is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
The senior offensive lineman from Portland, Ore. also received his third All-NESCAC honor of his career. He was named a Second Team selection as a freshman and senior, and received First Team laurels as a sophomore.
