MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Sophomore defensive tackle Taj Gooden of the Wesleyan University football team has been named to the D3football.com 2018 All-East Region Team and was named a First Team selection on defense.
The teams, selected in balloting by East Region sports information directors and D3football.com staff, were chosen from 328 nominations by full Division III member schools. A total of 78 players were chosen. Players nominated for All-Region are eligible to be considered for D3football.com All-America honors, which will be announced the evening of Dec. 14, in D3football.com's pregame coverage for Stagg Bowl XLV.
The All-Region selection is the first of Gooden's career. He was also named All-NESCAC First Team Defense earlier this year as well. The sophomore from Brooklyn, N.Y. led the conference in tackles-for-loss with 17.5 and finished second in the NESCAC in sacks with nine. The 64 yards lost on his nine sacks were also a conference-best. Gooden finished the 2018 campaign with 35 tackles (3.9 per game), a forced fumble, a pass break-up, and a blocked kick.
Gooden is the only NESCAC athlete to receive First Team honors. Jack Griffiths and Andrew Yamin of Amherst were named Second Team selections, and Austin Baiardi of Trinity earned Third Team honors
