With Hannah Plappert '16 scoring the first and third goals of the night for the Cardinals, and Cici Frattasio '18 getting credit for the game winner in the 23rd minute, Wesleyan captured a 3-1 victory at Roger Williams Tues., Sept. 8 to inaugurate the 2015 season. In the Wesleyan net, Sara Grundy '16 played a steady game with six saves in holding the Hawks to a lone tally. Up next for the Cardinals is the home opener Fri., Sept. 11 against a high-scoring Babson squad, which stands 3-0 on the year behind a 15-goal production.
Plappert used a strong solo rush into the circle from the left side and planted a shot into the right corner during the seventh minute, spotting Wesleyan a 1-0 edge. Though Roger Williams evened the count at 1-1 just 2:17 later, the rest of the night's scoring belonged to the Cardinals. Frattasio converted a pass from Caitlin Majweski '16 into her first career field hockey goal at Wesleyan in the 23rd minute for a 2-1 Wesleyan lead. That stood up as the halftime score. When Plappert received a pass from Lizzie Horwitz '19 and scored just 59 second into the second half in a manner much like she did on the opening marker, Wesleyan had a two-goal cushion it would not relinquish as Grundy came up with five of her six stops in the second period.
Shots and penalty corner for the game were just about even but the Cardinals were more efficient on the night, putting 10 of 12 shots in cage while RWU connected for just seven of 12 attempts on net. Wesleyan is now 2-0 all-time vs. the Hawks, having taken the first meeting between the teams last year, 1-0.
